contemplated. Eventually, in 1947, the Modern Commonwealth replaced the
British Commonwealth as India
emerged as a new Dominion followed soon by
the rest of the non-white colonies. India set the example for the
political
independence of the developing world. Following India’s independence, colonies
in Asia,
Africa and in the other parts of the world began to demand independence
from Britain. However, after the
Second World War, Britain was under various
economic pressures and therefore she could no longer afford the
financial burden
of their defence and she proceeded with a steady process of decolonisation which,
as we
said, was substantially completed by 1963. As most of the ex-colonies
retained the old connections with
Britain, the British Commonwealth, which
consisted of British stock (Australia, Canada and New Zealand),
became the
Modern Commonwealth. Therefore, as the empire had been facing a variety of
pressures for
quite a while, the Second World War was marely a turning point. It
is important that such situations and
circumstances are discussed in detail in the
book.

In Chapter One of the
book, I begin with a theoretical work of the elite –
to see how in a society an elite emerges, and, more
importantly, how they
legitimise themselves, especially in the western political sphere in
the
contemporary period. Then, in the same chapter, I shall move on to define the
British political
elite, their power and interests, as applies to this book, and their
link with the ‘Establishment’ in
Britain. I shall, of course, examine the social
structure of Britain in order to find out how the elite, or
the British political elite
in this case, came about. We shall discuss the method by which the
British
political elite legitimised themselves in Britain. Also, I shall see how policies
come to mature
among the elite.
