a role in
three inter-linked circles, i.e. with the U.S.A. , Europe, and the Modern
Commonwealth.
Finally,
it is important to point out that this is not a work about the Modern
Commonwealth as such. This work is
about how the Modern Commonwealth
came about as a result of the decolonization process, as handled by the
British
political elite, and what it was supposed to mean for Britain. Therefore, I shall
not be
concerned with the individual countries in the Old or Modern
Commonwealth. However, in Chapter Five. India
will be used as a case study.
After all, India was the ‘ jewel ‘ of the British empire, and was
Labour’s biggest
issue, with regard to the empire, whilst in power between 1945 and 1951.
Chapter
Six shows that the Conservative Governments of 1951-63 were mainly concerned
with Africa.
Therefore, I have chosen as case studies two colonies which provided
more complications than most with regard
to the granting of independence;
Kenya and Uganda.
